Beginning the week of November 8, we begin our next small group study “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” In the introduction to his book by the same title, author Philip Yancey writes, “…I sometimes find a shortage of grace within the church, an institution founded to proclaim, in Paul’s phrase, ‘the gospel of God’s grace.’ …In my experience, rejoicing and gladness are not the first images that come to mind when people think of the church. They think of holier-than-thous. They think of church as a place to go after you have cleaned up your act, not before. They think of morality, not grace. …[But] as I look back on my own pilgrimage, marked by wanderings, detours, and dead ends, I see now that what pulled me along was my search for grace. I rejected the church for a time because I found so little grace there. I returned because I found grace nowhere else.”
In this follow-up study, Yancey continues to explore (and invites us to do the same), the reality of grace something, he asserts, “the world cannot duplicate and the one thing it craves above all else”—and what it looks like in action. Each session includes a 15 to 20 minute video reflection by the author; time for discussion and Bible reading; prayer; and weekly “between session” reading and reflection. Sign-up sheets are available at the Welcome Desk.
