Launch into Reading

Zion Foundation Awards Grant to Provide Easy Reader Books for Local Elementary Students.
About Zion Foundation

Launch into Reading

Launch into Reading is a program for multilingual learners at Frost Lake Elementary School in St. Paul. Zion member and school teacher Karen Christenson developed the program. Through this grant, multilingual students received a variety of Easy Reader mini books (12 sets of 75 books), helping them learn simple English vocabulary.

Multilingual learners make up more than 40% of the school’s 520 students. The school was thrilled to provide its students with these beginning phonics books, which help them succeed in reading English. They learn the corresponding phonics skills, then read these Easy Readers together in small groups. Once students can read the books independently, they take them home to continue practicing their skills.

Launch into Reading gives students an opportunity to identify English sight words, grow their literacy skills and confidence in learning the language.
